VM Motori was founded by two entrepreneurs, Claudio Vancini and Ugo Martelli (hence the ’VM’) in 1947.
VM merged with Stabilimenti Meccanici Triestini in Trieste in 1971, then Finmeccanica took a majority stake in the combined company. The company was referred to as ’Finmeccanica VM’ for many years.[1]
In 1989, Finmeccanica restructured, selling its stake in VM Motori to company managers and Midland Montague in a leveraged buyout, leaving the company with its single Cento plant.
Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) bought VM Motori in 1995. In 2000, DDC was purchased by DaimlerChrysler AG.

In September 2008, GAZ Group announced plans to purchase a 50% stake from Penske Corp,[3] but ultimately cancelled them in February 2009.[4]
On 11 February 2011, Fiat Powertrain Technologies and Penske Corporation had reached an agreement under which Fiat Powertrain would purchase Penske Corporation’s fifty-percent stake in VM Motori S.p.A.[5][6]

In 1947, the company produced the first Italian air-cooled diesel engine with direct injection.
In 1964, the company introduced entire new families of air-cooled diesel engines for fishing boats and the industrial machine markets.
The year 1974 saw the introduction of a new series of high-speed (4,200 rpm) HR-series, pre-combustion chamber, water-cooled, turbocharged engines.
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta, produced in Arese, rolled off the line with a VM Motori engine under the bonnet in 1979, signaling VM’s move to the OEM automotive market. This was Italy’s first turbodiesel engine.[1] The engines still retained some maritime features, such as individual heads for each cylinder - a design which made it easier to produce different cylinder configurations.[9]
During the 1980s, British Leyland chose VM engines as the smoothest, most petrol-like units available for diesel models of their Range Rover and Rover SD1; the choice continued with the later Rover 800.
The Covini B24, T40 and C36 models all used VM Motori turbodiesel engines ranging from 4 to 6 cylinders.[10][11]
The after-cooled, electronic-combustion, ’Turbotronic’ engine was unveiled in 1990. It was supplied to Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, and Rover.
In 1995, when OEM automotive sales accounted for 75% of income, a major deal with Chrysler saw agreements to supply engines for their Jeep Grand Cherokee and Voyager (2.5-litre) models. VM Motori’s 2.8-litre common railturbodiesel engine was chosen for the Jeep Liberty CRD(Cherokee in Europe). The 2005 and later Chrysler Grand Voyager and 2012 model year Chevrolet Colorado That sale in Thailand is also fitted with the VM 2.8-litre (R428) engine.
In 1998 a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine and its three-cylinder derivate a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine was developed by VM Motori. Engines featured a single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, and common rail direct fuel injection.[12] Both engines were licensed to the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai.[13][nb 1] 1.5-litre engine was used in the second generation of the Hyundai Accent, the Hyundai Getz and the Hyundai Matrix.[14] These were produced and marketed between the fall of 2001 and the end of 2005.[14] The book of genesis. In 2004, GM Daewoo licensed the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre common rail engine designs, and built a dedicated engine plant,[15] which started production 2006. The 2.0 L diesel is used in the Daewoo Winstorm (also badged as the Chevrolet Captiva, and in the related Opel Antara), the Daewoo Lacetti (also badged as the Chevrolet Lacetti), the Daewoo Tosca (also badged as the Chevrolet Epica) and the Chevrolet Cruze.
The latest vehicle to benefit from a 2.5 L VM Motori diesel engine is the purpose-built LTI (London Taxis International) London style taxicab. The TX4 is the first of the TX range of taxis to include a VM Motori engine.
The company is also selling its products to off-highway applications, such as marine and defense. MTU Friedrichshafen, a German diesel engine manufacturer, holds the exclusive sales rights for VM Motori off-highway engines outside of Italy.
In June 2010, VM Motori started the production of the new 2.8L 4-cylinder Euro 5 engine to power the 2011 Jeep Wrangler, 2011 Jeep Cherokee and 2012 Lancia Voyager. The A428 makes 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) and 460 N⋅m (340 lb⋅ft) of torque at 1,800 rpm. On the manual version of the Jeep Wrangler, the A428 features the Stop/Start system to reduce the CO2 emissions.
In January 2011, VM Motori launched its brand new engine 3.0L V6 Variable Valve TimingA 630 DOHC With 241 hp (180 kW; 244 PS) and 550 N⋅m (410 lb⋅ft) of torque. Thanks to a collaboration with Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the engine features the latest FPT Common RailMultijet2 technology for improved performance, fuel economy and NVH. In 2013, the engine was redesigned to comply with Euro5+ emissions standards.
The first application of the A 630 DOHC was the 2011 Grand Cherokee. The same engine also powers the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco-Diesel since 2014, and in lightly tuned form, the Maserati Ghibli III. The engine won several awards including Ward’s 10 Best engines of 2014 during its first model year of production in the Jeep &Ram. Recovering a failed server has traditionally been a tedious task involving reinstallation of the operating system, mounting and cataloging the backup tape, then performing a full restore. Automated System Recovery makes that process significantly easier. Automated System Recovery requires you to create an ASR set, consisting of a backup of critical system files, including the registry, and a floppy disk listing the Windows system files that are installed on the computer. If the server ever fails, you simply restart with the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM and select the option to perform an Automated System Recovery. The process uses the list of files on the ASR disk to restore standard drivers and files from the original Widows Server 2003 CD-ROM and will restore remaining files from the ASR backup set.
To create an ASR set, open the Backup Utility from the Accessories program group or by clicking Start, then Run, and typing Ntbackup.exe. If the Backup And Restore Wizard appears, click Advanced Mode. Then, from the Backup Utility’s Welcome tab or from the Tools menu, select ASR Wizard. Follow the instructions of the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard. It will request a 1.44 megabyte (MB) floppy disk to create the ASR floppy. The ASR Wizard is shown in Figure 13-2.

The backup created by the ASR Wizard includes disk configuration information for each disk in the computer, a System State backup, and a backup of files including the driver cache. The backup set is sizable. On a standard installation of Windows Server 2003, the ASR backup size will be more than 1 gigabyte (GB).
The ASR floppy disk is created by the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard, and is specific to the system and the time at which the ASR set was created. You should label the ASR backup set and floppy disk carefully and keep them together.
The ASR floppy disk contains two catalogs of files on the system: Asr.sif and Asrpnp.sif. If the system does not have a floppy drive when you create the ASR set, you can create the floppy disk after running the wizard by copying these two files from the %System-root%repair folder on the system to another computer that does have a floppy drive, and copying the files to the floppy disk on that second system. If you lose the floppy disk, you can restore the two files from the %Systemroot%repair folder in the ASR backup set. You must have the ASR floppy disk to perform an Automated System Recovery. If the system does not have a floppy drive, you will need to connect one before performing the restore.
Tip The ASR set contains the files required to start the system. It is not a comprehensive backup of the entire system. Producing a cross-section of a river channel is a basic river fieldwork skill.
Whether you need to find the discharge, or examine the profile of a feature such as a meander or riffle, it will be necessary to produce a cross-section of the river.
The first stage is to measure the width and depth of the river. The data gathered can then be plotted to create a scale diagram of the cross-section, or used to find the cross-sectional area and wetted perimeter of the river.
A long, waterproof, tapemeasure is needed to find the width of the river.
A rigid meter rule and / or a longer pole, such as a surveying pole, are needed for the actual depth readings.
It’s not really equipment, but if you are wearing a watch, check that it is waterproof before doing this experiment. You will be putting your hands under the water.
Stream Width
The width of the river must first be found. To do this, a tape measure can be stretched from one bank to the other at 90° to the course of the river. The start and finishing points for the measuring are the points at which the dry bank meets the water. To avoid drag induced by the tape making contact with the flowing water, and the consequent possible increase in distance measured due to the tape being stretched in to a curve, it should be stretched taught roughly 20cm above water level. The ends of the measured section should be determined by observation from directly above the tape at 90° to the ground. Observation from directly above the tape ensures that the margin of error is kept at a minimum.
It is possible that the river or stream only occupies part of the whole channel, and that in flood conditions the river expands and currently dry bank areas become part of the channel. If you wish to include a prediction of the river’s characteristics when in flood you will need to also measure the bankfull width.
Bankfull Width
A tape measure should be stretched from one bank to the other at 90° to the course of the river. The start and finishing points for the measuring are the points where the vegetation and gradient of the bank suggest that the river has reached its maximum capacity. If the water were to rise above these points flooding of the surrounding area would occur. The tape is stretched taught between the measuring points. The ends of the measured section are determined by observation from directly above the tape at 90° to the ground. Observation from directly above the tape ensured that the margin of error was kept at a minimum.
Water Depth
Having established the width of the river, the next job is to find it’s depth at regular intervals across it’s width. The number of readings taken will depend upon the width of the river and the amount of detail you require. A rigid meter rule is immersed in the water, every 50cm, until it just touches the bed of the river. It is held with its edge facing upstream, thus reducing to a minimum the surface area exposed to the running water. It is necessary to reduce the exposed surface area for two reasons. Firstly, the water may be flowing quite rapidly in places and its force can be sufficient to bend it out of the desired position at 90° to the river bed. The bend induced in the rule could result in an apparent increase in the depth being measured. Secondly,the water, upon meeting the face of the rule will form a bow wave. This pressure wave may result in an increase in measured water depth upstream of the rule and a decrease in measured depth downstream. By positioning the rule with its narrowest edge facing into the flow it is most resistant to flexing and least able to create a bow wave. Errors in the readings are thus kept to a minimum.
If the water becomes too deep for a meter rule, a surveying pole or similar item can be used, the depth marked on it and then measured with a tape.
WARNING: If the water is so deep that you cannot use a meter rule, think very carefully about going into the river. Only go into deep water if you know what you are doing.

Plotting your data onto graph paper is the same as drawing any other graph, with one major difference. Instead of measuring values up from zero at the bottom of the graph, you must measure then down from zero at the top of the graph. This is because you are plotting depths that go down from ground level.
Having drawn your cross-section by ’joining the dots’ on your graph you have created a scale picture of a slice through the river. This diagram can be used to calculate the cross-sectional area or wetted perimeter of the river, which are needed to find discharge and channel efficiency.

Each folding panel has three legs providing excellent stability which makes it super easy for one person to set up.
The panels latch to one another with a simple and secure integrated shepherds hook latch (this means there will be no pins or small parts to keep track of). The latch secures both the top and bottom of the panel for superior stability on any surface.

Set-up could not be easier
A variety of pen configurations can be created. For example, four panels can be set up to create a stable freestanding 13’-6” x 13’-6” square pen or a 16’-2” diameter round pen.
There is no need to worry about where to install a gate as each panel section can be used as a gate. Simply unlatch the panel and swing it open. The leg at the end of the panel will hold the gate in position as you gather your horse.

All of these examples are from the west, mostly on the California Zephyr, the Southwest Chief, or the Ski Train. Paint schemes have changed over time, as have the models of locomotives. I have photos of basically all types and livery in use on western long-haul trains since the start of the Amtrak California Zephyr era in 1983.

The F40PH is basically a cowled version of the GP40-2, with an added Head-End Power (HEP) generator. These 3000-HP units began arriving in the late 1970s, and served Amtrak well for over 20 years. Arriving in three groups, they were numbered (by group) in the ranges 200 to 229, 230 to 328, and 329 to 400. The first group had smaller 1,500-gallon fuel tanks; the latter two groups had the larger 1,800-gallon version. Most F40PHs have now been retired or sold to other operations, so there is no real numbering conflict with the higher series of P42s.In March 1984, Amtrak F40PH locomotives Nos. 374 and 265 are leading the California Zephyr westbound near tunnel 1, above the Highway 72 bridge just west of Denver. No. 374 is in the relatively-new Phase III paint scheme, whereas No. 265 is still in Phase II. July 1986 has Nos. 358 and 316 on the point of train No. 6, a half-mile east of the photo above. No. 287 leads No. 6 on June 30, 1995 at Glenwood Springs, CO. By now there often were AMD103s on the route, and the days of the F40s were numbered.Nos. 388 and 298 are leased to Ansco to power the Ski Train for the 1997/1998 season. Here they’re grinding up through Plainview on January 2, 1998. A common arrangement for two seasons, it turned out that to have only two units on the long train-- one running HEP as well as traction power-- was to operate right on the margin of reliability. Eventually, the operation began using three F40’s.
Bottom: the prior week (December 28, 1997) the same power leads the train through Crescent siding.Nos. 334, 332, and 40-(something) are being leased by Ansco to power the Ski Train in August 1999. Here the trio is at Winter Park, CO, waiting while the train unloads passengers. Afterwards, they will take the train to Tabernash to be turned, and bring it back for loading later in the day. To my knowledge I only saw one of these, ever. They wore a unique paint scheme (dubbed the ’Pepsi Can’ by railfans). I only caught the unit on analog video; here is a screen capture of No. 503.

The AMD 103, or ’Genesis’ series, of locomotives was rolled out in 1993 as the next generation of diesel road power for Amtrak. The first group generated 4,000 HP, and are designated as type P40. They are numbered in the range 800 to 843. Most were gradually mothballed as the P42’s came online, but since circa 2013 some have been reactivated.Two P40s, Nos. 822 and 812, head up No. 5 at East Portal, CO on November 25, 1994. They wear the first Genesis paint scheme, where the stripes fade out toward the back of the unit. This was supposed to be reminiscent of a ribbon flapping in the breeze. The scheme did not long endure, probably because it was hard to maintain. Both of these units were repainted circa 1999-2000 in the Phase IV scheme, a la No. 16 below.
(Incidentally, No. 822 is now painted in a Heritage Scheme)A going-away shot: the same train enters the portal, and we have a closer look at the back end of the two units. This scheme was only applied to the P40 series. No. 805 is captured on video at east Rocky on 1/04/1997.No. 816 has been repainted into Phase 5 and resuscitated for regular service again. Here I caught it on No. 6 entering Debeque Canyon in Colorado, just east of Palisade (4/28/2014)GE Genesis (AMD103) Units: the P42
Beginning in 1996/97,GE released an updated version of the Genesis, the P42. P42s are nearly identical to P40s on the outside (minus a rear hostler window), but have an additional 250 horsepower. They are numbered in the series 1 to 207. After the advent of the P42s, the P40s appeared only rarely on the CZ. Nearly all were in storage by 2003.
There have been three different paint schemes applied to P42 locomotives, plus minor variations. Styles have changed over time, plus Amtrak has had different looks for different services. The current standard is the Phase V design, though the transition has taken more than three years to complete. (Author’s opinion-- they finally scored a home run in the styling department with the Acela-inspired Phase V look.)The Genesis ProjectUp-close detail photos of P42 Nos. 75 and 201: click here. P42 No. 19 is on No. 5 at Rocky Flats, CO on 12/26/1998. It wears the second Genesis scheme-- solid stripes all the way to the back doors. This simplified design is basically a modified Phase III look, adjusted to deal with the nose contours on Genesis units. About two years later it received the Phase IV scheme, and towards the end of 2003 was put in Phase V colors. Another pair of P42s led by No. 44 have train No. 5 at Grand Junction, 8/01/1998. Notice that the Genesis Phase III stripes do not line up with the stripes on the baggage car (or any other cars). Here’s the opposite side of No. 44, as the train pulls out of the station. You can see the stripes well. The angle of the photo doesn’t show the large number very well, just small numbers on the cab doors.P42 No. 16 has the eastbound CZ at Glenwood Springs on August 7, 2001. It’s in the Phase IV Intercity scheme, not as commonly seen in the West as the other schemes, even though it matched the current Superliner Phase IV look. This unit was repainted in Phase V in Spring 2003.Two P42s, Nos. 129 and 145, lead the westbound CZ at Clay (west of Denver) on 8/5/01. They are in the Phase V paint scheme, the Amtrak design of choice at present. Some refer to this as the ’Shamu’ look (ever been to Sea World?). The third unit is still in the modified Genesis phase 3 scheme (without the dots). Yes, this view was shot from aboard the train.P42 No. 10 is on the team track at Denver Union Station on New Years Day, 2004. It’s seen from the lounge car of Train No. 5 as it departs the station. No. 10 wears the revised Phase V scheme with the lowered skirt stripes. P42 No. 155 is on the point of Amtrak No. 5 on New Years Day 2004 at Glenwood Springs. She wears the original version of Phase V. Note that the red sill stripe is slightly higher, with a blue pinstripe below, and dark gray below that. There’s also a small Amtrak logo below the cab windows.P42 No. 65 is the trailing unit on Amtrak No. 5 on New Years Day 2004 at Glenwood Springs. She’s in the modified Phase V scheme.Top: No. 25 sits in at Denver Union Station on 12/31/2006. Amtrak has been keeping a spare unit here to protect the California Zephyrs. At the time of the photo, Denver was buried under its second blizzard in a week. The Ski Train in the background had been annulled the previous two days due to conditions on the UP.
Bottom: Here’s No. 25 again, this time in warmer climes on the eastbound Southwest Chief at Gallup station, 9/24/2011.No. 75 is running second on the eastbound California Zephyr at Grand Junction, CO on 1/05/2006. On this day the train was being run as a stub operation west of Denver, terminating at Grand Junction, and as such was run without sleepers, baggage car, or lounge. This locomotive has obviously run into something-- probably a grade crossing accident-- giving her a nasty crease across the nose. There is no builder’s placard on this side, probably lost during multiple repaintings (or wreck damage?).TOP: No. 201 is on the point, same train as No. 75 above. She looks sharp in late Phase V, despite several dings in the paint that have rusted through. Note the mismatched paint on the access panel below the engineer’s window. More views of No. 201 here.
MIDDLE and BOTTOM: No. 201 leads train No. 5 westbound through Byers Canyon on August 9, 2007. The alignment of US 40 on the opposite side of the canyon allows for good viewing in most cases, except for the code lines which were still in place at this time. No. 18 trails on train No. 5 on 8/09/2007 in Byers Canyon, CO. A decent overhead shot which shows an interesting weathering feature: since Amtrak usually runs elephant-style, the exhaust grime sweeps almost exclusively to the rear of the unit. in 2011, Amtrak decided to commemorate its 40th anniversary by repainting one locomotive after each of its historical paint schemes. No. 156 sports an adaptation of the first scheme used after Amtrak’s creation. The heritage units are extremely popular among railfans, and this one is arguably the most popular of them. It’s definitely my personal favorite, although the Phase 2 unit is a close second.

These locomotives were purpose-built for commuter railroads. 15 are in dedicated service on the Surfliner trains. I managed to bag a couple of them during a trip to San Diego. No. 450 is leading a Surfliner train flying through through Rose Canyon in north San Diego. If you walk in this area, be aware these trains approach fast and quietly. Note it’s on the far track.No. 453 in nearly the same spot as the photo above, except that it’s pushing backwards up the valley. Note it’s on the near track.
Given the history of Amtrak’s painting practices, we can no doubt expect new paint schemes to appear as time goes on. The locomotive fleet, however, is likely to remain stable for some years, since most of the units in service have been running for less than a decade. Metra F59PHI No. 90 was released Monday from the company’s paint booth in a Chicago & North Western-inspired scheme. The design incorporates elements of C&NW’s paint scheme worn on early passenger diesel locomotives such as EMD’s E6, Alco’s DL-109, and Fairbanks-Morse “Erie Built” units. PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO: The EMD F59PHI is a high speed locomotive produced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1994 to 2001. It features an isolated cab, lightweight body, and a streamlined shape, features that were absent on the original commuter F59PH.
First built for the California Department of Transportation(CDoT), the F59PHI has seen service in all four corners of America, (Mostly seen in California) as well as in the Pacific Northwest/Montreal area in Canada.
In 1990, the State of California passed a bill that would result in massive funding for the state transportation systems. It also resulted in a separate, state funded system of regional Amtrak routes.
CDoT wanted a locomotive that was both reliable and attractive. They approached EMD, who responded with the lightweight, high-speed F59PHI locomotive.
Soon after, more orders arrived. Amtrak ordered 21 of these locomotives for their Pacific Sufliner service (separate from Amtrak California), and the North Carolina Department of Transportation also selected it as their primary motive power. West Coast Express (operated by TransLink) in Metro Vancouver, also selected it for starting up its service.
Montreal’s Agence de Metropolitaine de Transport bought 11 of these locomoties to go with their Bombardier Bi-Level coaches, which were just arriving.
The F59PHI was produced until 2001. It was taken off of EMD’s lineup because it wasn’t able to meet the EPA Tier 1 regulations.
Some of Amtrak California’s F59PHI’s have been rebuilt by EMD, these are ECO repowers.

A perfect storm is an event in which a rare combination of circumstances drastically aggravates the event.[1] The term is used by analogy to an unusually severe storm that results from a rare combination of meteorological phenomena.Origin[edit]
The Oxford English Dictionary has published references going back to 1718 for ’perfect storm’, though the earliest citations use the phrase in the sense of ’absolute’ or ’complete’, or for emphasis, as in ’a perfect stranger’.
The phrase appears in William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel Vanity Fair:
I have heard a brother of the story-telling trade at Naples preaching to a pack of good-for-nothing honest, lazy fellows by the sea-shore, work himself up into such a rage and passion with some of the villains whose wicked deeds he was describing and inventing, that the audience could not resist it; and they and the poet together would burst out into a roar of oaths and execrations against the fictitious monster of the tale, so that the hat went round, and the bajocchi tumbled into it, in the midst of a perfect storm of sympathy.
The first use of the expression in the meteorological sense comes from Thursday May 30th 1850, when the Rev. Lloyd of Withington (Manchester, England) describes ’A perfect storm of thunder and lightning all over England (except London) doing fearful and fatal damage’ when recording monthly rainfall measurements for that year. This record is kept by the UK Meteorological Office.[2] The next recorded instance is in the March 20, 1936, issue of the Port Arthur News in Texas: ’The weather bureau describes the disturbance as ’the perfect storm’ of its type. In 1993, journalist and author Sebastian Junger planned to write a book about the 1991 Halloween Nor’easter storm. Technically, this storm was an extratropical cyclone. In the course of his research, he spoke with Bob Case, who had been a deputy meteorologist in the Boston office of the National Weather Service at the time of the storm. Case described to Junger the confluence of three different weather-related phenomena that combined to create what Case referred to as the ’perfect situation’ to generate such a storm:
*warm air from a low-pressure system coming from one direction
*a flow of cool and dry air generated by a high-pressure from another direction
*tropical moisture provided by Hurricane Grace
From that, Junger keyed on Case’s use of the word perfect and coined the phrase perfect storm, choosing to use The Perfect Storm as the title of his book.
Junger published his book The Perfect Storm in 1997 and its success brought the phrase into popular culture. Its adoption was accelerated with the release of the 2000 feature film adaptation of Junger’s book.Since the release of the movie, the phrase has grown to mean any event where a situation is aggravated drastically by an exceptionally rare combination of circumstances.[1]
Although the 1991 Halloween Nor’easter was a powerful storm by any measure, there have been other storms that have exceeded its strength. According to Case, the type of convergence of weather events to which he was referring, while unusual, is not exceptionally rare or unique, despite the way the phrase is commonly used.[4][5]Other uses[edit]
The term ’perfect storm’ is nearly synonymous with ’worst-case scenario’, although the latter carries more of a hypothetical connotation.
’Perfect storm’ has also been used as a metaphor for a relationship such as in the popular hit songs ’Dark Horse’ by Katy Perry, ’Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift, ’Perfect Storm’ by Brad Paisley, ’Invincible’ by Kelly Clarkson, and ’Should’ve Been Us’ by Tori Kelly.
From the beginning, the phrase was in heavy use during the financial crisis of 2007–2008, even to the point of pundits anticipating ’another perfect storm’.[6]

It’s no fish ye’re buying, it’s men’s lives.--Sir Walter Scott: The Antiquary, Chapter 11 A soft fall rain slips down through the trees and the smell of ocean is so strong that it can almost be licked off the air. Trucks rumble along Rogers Street and men in t-shirts stained with fishblood shout to each other from the decks of boats. Beneath them the ocean swells up against the black pilings and sucks back down to the barnacles. Beer cans and old pieces of styrofoam rise and fall and pools of spilled diesel fuel undulate like huge iridescent jellyfish. The boats rock and creak against their ropes and seagulls complain and hunker down and complain some more. Across Rogers Street and around the back of the Crow’s Nest, through the door and up the cement stairs, down the carpeted hallway and into one of the doors on the left, stretched out on a double bed in room number twenty-seven with a sheet pulled over him, Bobby Shatford lies asleep. He’s got one black eye. There are beer cans and food wrappers scattered around the room and a duffel bag on the floor with t-shirts and flannel shirts and blue jeans spilling out. Lying asleep next to him is his girlfriend, Christina Cotter. She’s an attractive woman in her early forties with rust-blond hair and a strong, narrow face. There’s a TV in the room and a low chest of drawers with a mirror on top of it and a chair of the sort they have in high-school cafeterias. The plastic cushion cover has cigarette burns in it. The window looks out on Rogers Street where trucks ease themselves into fish-plant bays. It’s still raining. Across the street is Rose Marine, where fishing boats fuel up, and across a small leg of water is the State Fish Pier, where they unload their catch. The State Pier is essentially a huge parking lot on pilings, and on the far side, across another leg of water, is a boatyard and a small park where mothers bring their children to play. Looking over the park on the corner of Haskell Street is an elegant brick house built by the famous Boston architect, Charles Bulfinch. It originally stood on the corner of Washington and Summer Streets in Boston, but in 1850 it was jacked up, rolled onto a barge, and transported to Gloucester. That is where Bobby’s mother, Ethel, raised four sons and two daughters. For the past fourteen years she has been a daytime bartender at the Crow’s Nest. Ethel’s grandfather was a fisherman and both her daughters dated fishermen and all four of the sons fished at one point or another. Most of them still do. The Crow’s Nest windows face east into the coming day over a street used at dawn by reefer trucks. Guests don’t tend to sleep late. Around eight o’clock in the morning, Bobby Shatford struggles awake. He has flax-brown hair, hollow cheeks, and a sinewy build that has seen a lot of work. In a few hours he’s due on a swordfishing boat named the Andrea Gail, which is headed on a one-month trip to the Grand Banks. He could return with $5,000 in his pocket or he could not return at all. Outside, the rain drips on. Chris groans, opens her eyes, and squints up at him. One of Bobby’s eyes is the color of an overripe plum. Did I do that? Yeah. Jesus. She considers his eye for a moment. How did I reach that high? They smoke a cigarette and then pull on their clothes and grope their way downstairs. A metal fire door opens onto a back alley, they push it open and walk around to the Rogers Street entrance. The Crow’s Nest is a block-long faux-Tudor construction across from the J. B. Wright Fish Company and Rose Marine. The plate-glass window in front is said to be the biggest barroom window in town. That’s quite a distinction in a town where barroom windows are made small so that patrons don’t get thrown through them. There’s an old pool table, a pay phone by the door, and a horseshoe-shaped bar. Budweiser costs a dollar seventy-five, but as often as not there’s a fisherman just in from a trip who’s buying for the whole house. Money flows through a fisherman like water through a fishing net; one regular ran up a $4,000 tab in a week.
